How To Tell If Your Dock Could Need Some TLC

     Summer after summer, we hope that our families are able to use their docks without issue and ensure that boats stored on these docks are not at risk.      As we all know, wake on the lake can do a number to even the toughest docks, which is why one of the main things to check for is uneven floating! From time to time, an issue may occur causing you dock to float unevenly. This could be something major, like a missing float, or something as simple as needing some tips on weight distribution. If you notice a significate change in the way your dock sits in the water, don’t hesitate to call your trusted repair company for an inspection, and be sure to keep all parties off, including pets, as uneven docks can be quite slippery. 

     Storms, holidays, and winds can wreak havoc on docs as well, which means it is imperative to check the frames of your dock periodically. These frames harbor the structural integrity of your dock, and if they aren’t maintained, they could cause more and more damage, putting your family and your possessions at risk. This could be anything from a simple warp to more severe damage like a break in the frame, or twists causing unlevel decking or rendering lifts inoperable. Keep in mind that regular wear and tear can also cause these types of damages over time, so be sure to check, even if major storms or high traffic haven’t been in your area.

Rails and decks are subject to twists and warps, even when constructed with steel, but those with wood rails and decking, also need to worry about rot. Several times a year dock owners should inspect the wood on the dock to make sure it still has strength and no spots in the deck or rail are weak enough to not protect happy boaters over the summer. Ice freezing and thawing inside wood can cause significant damage, so an inspection in the spring is a necessity.
